History of Sausalito A Brief History Since its beginning, Sausalito has been many things to many people. For more than a century, fully rigged sailing ships have taken shelter along the waterfront. Visitors today have a unique opportunity to view some of the historic boats, classic yachts and sailing vessels in Sausalito’s scenic harbors and marinas. The northern region of Sausalito was once a major ship building site during World War II Liberty ships, tankers, and landing craft were manufactured in Sausalito. This area, known as the Marinship, later became a haven for artists, writers and crafts people who remain today.
